Tips for Converting Recipes to Vegan
There are a growing number of vegans out there. There might be some recipes that a vegan would like but that contain animal products. Fortunately, many recipes can be converted to vegan and taste just as good or even better. Consider the following strategies.
The first thing you will want to do is to remove any animal products that are in the recipe. Of course, you will need to take out anything obvious such as pieces of chicken, meat, pork, shrimp, etc. However, it is more than that. If there is anything that is made with meat such as a chicken-based broth you will need to take that out as well. A vegan also does not eat any products that come from an animal such as eggs, butter, milk, etc. You will also need to make sure that these are removed as well. Think about non-vegan items that might be hidden such as gelatin, which appears in things like Jello. Even some breads are not vegan. Sometimes removing this food is all you need to do to make a recipe vegan – it might still taste good without the meat products. This might work if the item is mostly vegan but just has some meat added such as a rice dish that is not vegan just because it has chicken added to the top.
Sometimes taking out the meat based products will make the meal not as flavorful. You might want to add in different vegan products to give it this flavor. One great product you can add is some tofu. Also, beans can make a great substitute for meat and can add some protein. Also, there are many meat and dairy substitute products – just make sure that you get one that is vegan and not merely vegetarian. Instead of chicken broth you can put in a vegan broth. You can also add in more vegetables, which can make the recipe healthier as well. If you feel that you want it to be more flavorful, then you could consider adding in different spices such as peppers, which can add a lot of flavor. Make sure that you read through the ingredients of anything you buy to make sure that it meets your dietary desires.
With some recipes you can easily substitute vegan products, whereas with others it will be more complicated. All you can do is experiment with different recipes until you find one that works great for you.
